Dear Colleagues,
Hello. An old Chinese proverb goes like this – “A single conversation with a wise man is better than ten years of study”. Although requiring a politically acceptable tweak in these liberated times, we’re sure you’ll agree that there’s no better way to educate yourself than to look for wise men who can fill ten years of your precious study time in a single conversation. Being of sound minds and good faith, we at MEMS, who always have our colleagues’ goodwill at heart, are very proud to present more than one wise person on the occasion of the MEMS Annual Congress 2010 which also incorporates the Postgraduate Endocrine Course. We are especially happy as this year’s meeting is being held for the first time ever in old Ipoh. “The city that tin built” or “The Bougainvillea City”, call it what you like, but this historic place has not seen this many a gathering of endocrinology enthusiasts since time immemorial.
Aptly themed “Thyroids’r’us”, this year’s edition sees a more thyroid-centric meeting as MEMS strives to address the short-falls in other less mainstream areas of endocrinology. Despite the growing community of thyroid patients, issues abound on the diagnosis and management of this increasingly prevalent group of disorders. With this in mind, we have brought together many a wise person to address all angles of thyroid disease, including reproductive and surgical issues. After all, we should be treating patients, not laboratory values. Never ones to limit ourselves though, we have also included study of all the usual old favourites such as diabetes, lipids and others.
Uniquely for Ipoh, we have strived to enhance the learning experience by varying the types of presentation and teaching methodology. It would not be wrong to say that we are experimenting to make our meetings more fun and interactive, employing some technical wizardry as well as down-to-earth psychology. With MEMS moving towards a more global audience, the increasing foreign participation in our meetings has inspired us to include foreign speakers for the first time. Lest some amongst you feel detached from your obsessions during these sessions, quality of life amenities such as internet, hospitality and coffee stations, to name a few, will be within easy reach.
Attending MAC is not just about learning and interacting. Mind and soul not being the sole purview of educated learning, a comprehensive collection of tours and travel has been prepared to make your time here a holistic one. Natural wonders abound in Perak, our silver state, which range from lofty and lush perches in the Cameron Highlands to a distinctly fishy smell around Pangkor Island. In between and on the way, the splendours of spelunking prevail in Gua Tempurung, Kellie’s castle contrives colonial intrigue and knuckle-whitening white water rafting in Gopeng beckon. That’s just a few, mind you.
Around the Impiana Casuarina Hotel Ipoh, we have gathered a national scientific committee with the participation of neighbouring countries. We hope to work hard to organise a perfect and memorable congress and hope that you will be able to accept our invitation and participate in moving the field of endocrinology forward towards excellence. See you soon.
On behalf of the Congress Committee & Faculty
